Teaching Aim

After learning Task 1, students will be able to properly use the information they have got to form a complete composition, especially correctly use the punctuation marks in their writings.

Step 1  Revision PPT 4

本课的中心是要教学生写一篇鼓励朋友的e-mail, 所以在本课的开始,就以检查学生家庭作业的形式,让学生通过对话呈现在Reading部分学过的关于肥胖和减肥的一些信息,既复习了所学的内容,又为以下学生的写作做了内容上的铺垫。

Act out your dialogue between you and your friend who is a little bit overweight.

 

Step 2 Skills building 3: using punctuation

标点符号是规范的英语写作中的一个重要方面。在设计本课时,首先用一个中国民间幽默小故事,引导学生认识到标点符号的重要性,也引起了学生的兴趣,再将标点符号以表格的形式呈现,在讲解完各种标点符号的作用之后,再以一个小游戏的方式对此知识进行巩固。

1. A tale about punctuation marks  (PPT 6-7)

  The teacher tells students a story related to the importance of the punctuation marks.

2. The definition of punctuation marks (PPT 8)

  Punctuation mark: any of the marks ( e.g. full stop, comma, question mark, etc) used in a written or printed text to separate sentences, etc to make the meaning clear.

3. The teacher presents the knowledge about the punctuation marks in the form of a table.

(PPT9— 10)

For each function of every punctuation mark, the teacher will give an example.

4. Play a game to consolidate the use of the punctuation marks. (PPT 11)

  The rule of the game:  the first student of each group in the classroom writes a sentence, and pass it the next student, who adds one more sentence and passes it to the student behind him/her, who writes another sentence and still passes it ——. All the sentences put together should form a complete story. And the last student will read the story to the whole class.

Note: Be careful in using the punctuation marks while writing sentences!

5. The teacher allows students 3 to 4 minutes and ask them to read the e-mail on page 56 and try to correct the wrong punctuation marks. Then check the answers with the whole class. (PPT13-14)

 

Step 3 Writing an e-mail encouraging a friend

本环节的设计旨在从内容上为下面一个环节学生自己写作提供内容上的帮助。

1. Read the e-mail by Li Fan, Hu Bo’s friend, and learn how to encourage and advise a friend with a problem.

Ask students to pay attention to punctuation marks.

2. Read the e-mail in Part A again and find the sentences that the writer uses to give advice and encouragement.

3. Discuss the following question:

  What is your advice on how to solve Hu Bo’s problem?

4. Write an e-mail encouraging your friend who has weight problems.

  Ask students to watch the three points:

    ●Use the information in Step 1 and 2 to help you.

    ●Use the correct punctuation marks to write your e-mail.

    ●Use some of the words and phrases in Part B.

5. Students’ assessment of their classmates’ writings.

  The teacher chooses some students’ writings and presents them on the screen. Then ask the whole class to point out the mistakes in them and make them better.

6. Present the sample writing. (PPT 21-23)

  The teacher shares sample writing with the whole class.

Step 4 Homework

   According to the teacher’s explanation, please rewrite your composition and try to make it better.
