Module 1 Unit 2 Task 1

Teaching aims:

This section consists of a series of activities which provide students opportunities to learn and practice the language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through all these activities, students will be able to learn how to ask for and give advice in English, how to understand the main idea while reading and how to write a letter of advice.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1

Show the beginning of a letter asking for advice, thus presenting two skills needed to write a letter of advice.

(1) Learn to ask for and give advice

(2) Learn to read for main points

 

Step 2

Ask the students to listen to a radio program for three times, and respectively finish the exercises on page 33 (slightly adjusted).

1) Listen to a radio talk show and write the names of the callers in the blanks below. (see page 33, step 1, A)

2) Listen to the radio talk show and complete the information. (see below)

ASKING FOR ADVICE

1) …, but I have things I want to do in my life. How can I still __________ and let my mum know I love her?

2) …, but I don’t like what she got me. __________ I tell her?

通过该练习,学生能在锻炼听力的同时,得到表示征求建议和提供建议的语言输入。

 

Step 3

Help the students conclude the procedure of asking for advice, and some useful expressions.

When asking for advice, you should …

Help the students conclude the procedure of giving advice, and some useful expressions.

When giving advice, you should …

1) ask questions;

2) show sympathy with

        I’m sorry to hear that.

        I hate it when that happens!

        I know just what you mean!

3) give advice, using

        You must make sure …

        Do … / Don’t …

Offer the students more expressions that might be helpful.

ASKING FOR ADVICE:

What’s your opinion on it?

May I have your comment on this matter?

Would it be a good idea to  do so? 

GIVING ADVICE:

What/How about trying a new method?

Why not find a new way?

You’d better change your former plan.

It is better to give up your former plan.

I’d like to suggest you make a new plan.

I strongly recommend that you try this one.

You might as well take this way.

If I were you, I would think over it.

Step 4

Brainstorm:

Think of some problems you have ever met, and ask for advice in class.

Think over the problems your classmates have told about, and give your advice.

Read the diary entries below. Underline the main point of each entry. (page 34)

Assignments:

Go through Skills building 3 and Step 3 after class.

Read the letter on page 37. Try to find the main points in the letter and answer the points in the letter.

Try to draft a letter of reply to the letter on page 37.
