Module 1 Unit 1 School Life Task 2

Teaching aims:

1.        to enhance integrated skills of comparing information and making a right decision;

2.        to help students grasp the basic skills of writing a public notice;

3.        to guide students to use what is being learned in class to solve a real-life problem by completing tasks;

4.        to promote students’ cooperation and make them appreciate others’ ideas and suggestions.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Lead-in

Lead in by completing two tasks. One is to ask students to choose a mobile phone for me and the other is to help them understand the way American people choose their president. In this way the topic of “comparing information” is presented. (PPT4-7)

1.      Tell students that I want to buy a new mobile phone and my husband recommends the two in the picture to me. Ask them if they have good ways to help me to make the decision. Then show them the information on PPT5 and tell them I have made final decision by comparing information.

2.      Ask students whether they know who the new president of USA is. Ask them whether they know how American people choose their president. Show them the information on PPT7 and help them understand how American people make comparisons.

设计说明 : 从生活中小事的解决到选举总统这样的大事都离不开“比较”,让学生明白“比较”的重要性,导入本课主题。

Step 2. Tips on comparing information

Help students find out how to compare information before making decisions and complete the work on page 14. (PPT8-10)

1.      Help students understand the tips on comparing information.

2.      Ask students to read an email and decide on the book that is wanted by following the tips.

设计说明: 帮助学生理解怎样比对信息,并通过练习进一步加深印象。

Step 3. Solve a real-life problem

Lightening is a student in my class. He is now going to move out of the dorm. Ask students to choose a flat for him based on his requirements.

1.      Read and understand what flat is wanted by Lightening.

2.      Read the information about the five flats carefully and decide which one is the most suitable.

3.      Ask students tell the reason for their decision.

设计说明: 让学生学以致用,把刚刚学过的知识用于帮助同班同学。情景的生活化和相对真实性会唤起学生动脑解决问题的兴趣。(PPT11-12)

Step 4. Lead in a new topic—Notice

Ask the question “why does Lightening want to move out of the dorm?” Encourage students to make a guess. The teacher will show the true reason by presenting a notice. In this way next topic is introduced.

1.      Encourage students to guess why Lightening will move out of the school dorm.

2.      Present a school notice and ask students to go through it.

3.      Ask students again for the reason why Lightening will move out.

设计说明: 本课的comparing information 和notice这两个部分本来是毫不相关的,通过这一问题的设置,把他们结合起来,并且自然地导入下一主题。(PPT13-14)

Step 5. Tips on writing a notice

By showing different types, structures, rules, possible sentences, help students grasp the writing skills of notices.

1.      Help students learn about two main types of notice by showing sample notice.

2.      Focus on the four different structures of public notices. I will show the four sample notices one by one and ask students to read carefully and draw a conclusion of the four different way to lay out the notice.

3.      (Group work) Explain the rules for writing notices. In order to help students grasp the rules, I will ask them to rewrite a notice by following these rules. After they have finished their work, I will compare their work with the model.

4.      Help them familiar with some possible expressions, which will be helpful in next step.  Help them understand passive voice is often used when necessary.

5.      Make them aware of the importance of handwriting.

Step 6. Write a notice

Ask students to write a notice by using what has been learned in class.

1.      Ask students to write a school notice.

2.      Ask some of them to present their work and I’ll help point out some possible mistakes.

3.      Ask students to read the sample notice

Step 7. Homework

Write a notice about talks in October.
